Compensatory Strategy Development

Compensatory strategy development is a fundamental aspect of programming at Touchstone Neurorecovery Center.  The staff works with each resident to develop coping strategies for limitations resulting from a brain injury.  Coping strategies often include the use of memory books to detail aspects of a person’s day.  These strategies help to increase the independence of the individual and work to reestablish normal routines, responsibilities and self-confidence.

Bilingual Services

Meeting the needs of Spanish-speaking residents and their families is an important goal for the treatment team at Touchstone.  Each Spanish-speaking resident and their family is assigned to a Spanish-speaking case manager.  This facilitates open communication and fosters clear lines of communication to maximize the effectiveness of our programs for each resident.  In addition, direct care staff and program facilitators that speak Spanish assist the resident throughout their daily programming.

Family Support, Education, Training

Family support is a key element of Touchstone Neurorecovery Center’s rehabilitation programs.
When neurological injuries occur, it affects not only the injured individual, but their family and social network.  We believe in treating patients like we would want our own families treated.  Families are encouraged to visit daily and on weekends.  We encourage family participation in treatment planning and encourage interaction with our physicians and team members.  Eighty-seven percent of transitional residents return home.  Thus, Touchstone places a strong emphasis on family support, education and counseling. Our family focus includes:

  • Communication and updates provided at a frequency that meets the family’s needs

  • Program director availability 24/7 to answer questions or provide assistance

  • Family involvement/visitation encouraged throughout length of stay

  • Family conferences with the treatment team to receive detailed reports on their loved one’s progress and to ask questions

  • Family training by therapists on transfers and completion of activities of daily living

  • Individualized education related to their loved one’s injury and expected outcomes

  • Staff provide assistance to residents when calling their families

  • Community center availability for use by family and friends for celebrations or other gatherings

  • Computer center availability to enable residents to e-mail friends and family

  • Passes home with goals for residents and follow up discussions with family members about areas that still need improvement

  • Case management assistance with discharge planning to another facility or home

  • Home evaluations by therapists as needed to ensure a safe household setting

  • Durable medical supply recommendations by therapists

  • Ongoing resource for questions and assistance even after discharge
